Autumn terms learning – 

Space

In this exciting topic children will learn all about the order of the planets and facts about each one. They will engage in a fascinating space day where they will discover what astronauts must wear to travel to space. They will also learn about Neil Armstrong and this topic will link to our Art and DT projects in Autumn Term.

English

In English this term the children will read the book 'Look Up' by Nathan Bryon and have a go at rewriting their own version of the story. They will learn how to use adjectives and different sentence starters to make their writing exciting. The children will also read 'The Man on the Moon', have a go at writing their own Space Recipes and then later on in the term will write their own space poems. 

Maths

In Maths this term, the children start off by learning Place Value, ordering and comparing numbers and learning the difference between tens and ones. After this the topic is Addition and Subtraction and then later in the term the children will learn about different types of 2D and 3D shapes. 

In Year 2, the focus is on learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will be practising these weekly at school and appreciate any extra practise that the children may do at home to help with the fluency of this.

Reading books:

At Bushmead we believe that reading is one of the most important skills the children have to acquire. From the beginning, we encourage parents to become fully involved in helping their child to learn to read. The teaching of reading is focused around the Little Wandle phonics scheme and the associated levelled books. It is also supported by a wide range of other reading material both factual and fictional and we are fortunate to have a newly updated and well-stocked selection of books in the library that the children can visit regularly. 

Please ensure that you read with your child every week night and record this reading in their reading diary. These will be checked by a school adult every morning and if they have not had time to read at home, then they will attend reading club at breaktime to read with a school adult. 

Homework Expectations In Year 2

- Regular reading - 5 times a week 

- Spelling practise three times a week, for a weekly test (Friday)

Reminders

* Please label all uniform, coats, bags, lunchboxes and water bottles. 

Please ensure that your child is coming to school smartly dressed, in the correct Bushmead uniform. Details of this can be found on our parents tab. Thank you!

Children may bring to school two healthy snacks. One for our morning settling activity and one for breaktime.

PE Days:

Both classes:  Tuesday (Outdoor) and Wednesday (Indoor)

Please come to school dressed in your PE kits on these days. Just a reminder that PE kits should be PLAIN with no logos (Dark coloured shorts/joggers, plain white t-shirt, dark coloured zip up jacket/jumper)

**Earrings MUST be removed on PE days please!
